State posts signs at 800 problematic bridges

The Associated Press • November 21, 2008

Jefferson City -- It might take up to six years to fix them, but Missouri motorists will now know when they're driving on a bridge on the transportation department's watch list.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has erected signs near more than 800 of the state's worst bridges depicting a blue bridge sitting above the words "SAFE & SOUND" -- the name of the program, not the condition of the bridge.

Contracts to repair or replace six spans have already been awarded.

Five are in St. Louis, and the sixth is in Kansas City. The rest of the problematic bridges are to be repaired or replaced by November 2014.

MoDOT wants drivers to start planning for alternative routes when they see the signs.
