Square renovations, again and again

November 20, 2008

How many times are we gong to renovate our public square?

Good question!

Tom Carlson and his troops seem to think that we need to do this again regardless of times done in the past. Also, money seems to be no object, or at least our City Council is thinking along these lines. I believe the newspaper quoted a price of $1.03 million. And of all things, the City Council has awarded the contract to Hunter, Chase and Associates.

Just how many times have we spent money on the renovation of our square? Of course, since money is no object with our council, let's continue to spend until we get it right regardless of the cost. This is apparently the attitude of our leaders in the city, especially Tom Carlson and his followers (City Council).

Well, let's get this done so that we can renovate again in about two years or sooner.

I understand that this is funded through a federal grant to the tune of about 80 percent and the balance of 20 percent will come out of our city's one-fourth cent sales tax for capital improvements.

Actually, the taxpayers in the city should have a vote in decisions of this type, especially with the cost involved.

However, leaving the taxpayers out of the decision-making process just opens the door for a continuation of this type decided by our council and friends.

What an operation!
