Raleigh, N.C. -- Sergei Samsonov and Ray Whitney scored 3 1/2 minutes apart in the third period to help the Carolina Hurricanes rally past the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Whitney followed Samsonov's first goal of the season with the go-ahead score with 13:27 remaining to jump-start a Carolina offense that averaged fewer than two goals in its previous six games.
Robert Lang scored for the Canadiens, who lost for the third time in four games.
Cam Ward made 28 saves for the Hurricanes, who have won two straight after dropping three in a row.
- Wild 2, Penguins 1 (SO): At Pittsburgh, Marek Zidlicky scored the only goal in the shootout and Minnesota benefited from a gift goal that Pittsburgh put into its own net. That proved costly for the Penguins, whose six-game winning streak was snapped.
Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom, 3-0 in shootouts this season, stopped 24 of 25 shots before turning aside Petr Sykora, Alex Goligoski and Sidney Crosby in the tiebreaker.
NHL scoring leader Evgeni Malkin's 13-game point streak ended for Pittsburgh. He had six goals and 21 assists during the streak.
- Oilers 7, Blue Jackets 2: At Columbus, Ohio, Shawn Horcoff had a goal and two assists to lead seven multiple-point scorers, and Edmonton snapped its three-game losing streak by routing Columbus.
Sheldon Souray, Andrew Cogliano, Tom Gilbert and Lubomir Visnovsky had a goal and an assist, and Marc Pouliot and Dustin Penner scored for the Oilers, who were outshot 39-19 and went a stretch of nearly 20 minutes without putting a puck on net.
Kristian Huselius and Rick Nash had a goal and assist for Columbus, which was 5-1-3 in its previous nine. Pascal Leclaire allowed all seven goals.
- Panthers 4, Lightning 3 (SO): At Tampa, Fla., Bryan McCabe scored twice in regulation and Nathan Horton had the lone goal in a shootout for Florida against Tampa Bay.
Tomas Vokoun made 49 saves, and David Booth added a goal for the Panthers, who have won three of four following a six-game losing streak.
