The Howell County Sheriff Department said in a news release that an autopsy was conducted Monday on the body found at a fire scene on County Road 6420, west of West Plains on Saturday.

The results of the autopsy have not been completed, and toxicology results are not expected back for several weeks.

Sheriff Robbie Crites said foul play has not been ruled out, nor positively determined to be the cause of death.

A possible identity has been discovered, but confirmation is pending.

Crites said the body is that of a male and that generally identification can be confirmed by scars, tattoos, dental records and if those fail, DNA testing.
